Day of the Dead is an interesting holiday celebrated in  Mexico where the the people honor their deceased loved ones by offering food, flowers, and Calaveras. The Calavera is an iconic and symbolic skull decorated with exquisite and often colorful details. It is usually made with clay molded sugar, thus the name “Sugar Skull” and decorated with feathers, beads, foils and icing. These sugar skulls are very colorful, beautiful, and whimsical, not scary at all!

People set up and decorate altars or tombs with these eye catching skulls not only to represent their departed loved ones but sometimes also to serve as a sugary treat for spirits who return home to visit their families!

These skulls symbolize death but in a positive light. It is believed that death is not the final stage in one’s life but rather a step forward into a higher level of conscience and existence.

For the Aztecs skulls were a positive symbol, not only of death but also of rebirth. Ancient artwork also have a prominent theme of skulls. It was regarded a symbol of power, life and death, and regeneration. Several deities were represented by skulls.
